The Story of Darian's Birth Day

Grandfather Richard took several photos. Out of consideration for the newborn, only one was taken with a flash, so the rest of the pictures resemble impressionist paintings.

At 12:42 am, on July 21, 2001, Julie gave birth to a beautiful baby girl at Tucson Medical Center, with able assistance from the calm and supportive father, Jason.

Carolyn and Richard were able to join all three of them after the birth and stay with them until 2:00 am.

In addition to being beautiful, Darian Elise Badger is a healthy, alert, curious little girl. She weighed 6 pounds and 15 ounces at birth.

Her APGAR score was 8.9, only because her initial coloring was a little off, but her coloring was normal 10 minutes after her birth. Jason calmed her and spoke to her while she was being measured. Darian looked at him and seemed to respond to his face and voice, and stopped crying.

Immediately after the birth, Julie looked and acted like her usual self, just a little bit tired, since she had had no sleep all day. Julie had been having contractions all day, and at 4 pm, she and Jason had gone to TMC. TMC allowed them to go to the birth center, and "real" labor started at 7:30 pm. She and Jason had hoped to have an underwater birth at the Birth Center, but at 11:00 PM there was concern about Darian's heart rate.

Julie had to come out of the warm tub and be transferred to TMC, via ambulance, but TMC was only a quarter mile away. By the time they got to the delivery room, the fetal heart rate was back to normal, and Julie was dilated 9 centimeters. So the hard labor began and Darian made her debut an hour and a half later.

More pictures (hopefully much better) will be added in the coming days.
