White House Ruins at the bottom of Canyon de Chelly. The Anasazi lived in and around the Canyon until around 1300 A.D., when they disappeared. No one knows why the Anasazi culture disappeared, although there are many theories: drought, warfare, overpopulation. The modern-day Hopi trace their ancestry back to the Anasazi. Carolyn and Richard walked to the bottom of the Canyon to look at the ruins. From the rim, the hike looked daunting, but it turned out to be an easy 3-mile roundtrip hike that took about two hours.
