Flash the
Phantom
Our 17.5-year-old
cat, Mr. Waggles, who had lived with us since he was 5 months old, passed away
on December 12, 2019 after a 3‑year battle with chronic kidney disease,
the biggest killer of domestic cats.
Five days later,
we left on an 18-day trip, during which time we decided that in order to help
us get through our grieving period, we would adopt a new cat when we returned
home.
We returned
on Saturday, January 4, 2020, and we went to the Humane Society of Southern
Arizona on Monday, January 6. After
spending almost 2 hours there, looking at all of the cats and kittens and rejecting
them because they had special dietary needs, Carolyn spotted a Buff Tabby that
we had not noticed before because he had been sleeping in a bottom cage. When the cat saw Carolyn, he stood up
on his hind legs and extended his forepaws through the cage, essentially saying,
“Take me home. Take me home”,
which we did. He’s 5 years
old, weighs 11 pounds, and had been in 2 shelters, but we don’t know anything
about his life prior to that.
His shelter
name had been Gene Kelly, which we didn’t care for, so Carolyn suggested
‘Flash’ because of how quickly he runs around the house, and then
she also suggested the name ‘Phantom’ because he is so fast that
he seems to magically appear and disappear. So his full name is ‘Flash the
Phantom’, but we refer to him as ‘Flash’ or ‘Flashy’.
