Kenya
Photo Safari
~~~ 1987 ~~~
Kenya
Beginning on August 1, 1987, Richard and
Carolyn went on a 9‑day/8‑night photo safari in Kenya. Over the years, we agreed that the
safari had been about two weeks long because we had seen and done so
much. After finding the safari
itinerary, we were shocked to discover that the entire safari was only 9
days long. To this day, we
agree that it was the best trip we have ever been on.
At the time of the trip, I worked for an
airline, World Airways, and we got a tremendous deal on the airfare. We flew from San Francisco to Nairobi, Kenya via Heathrow
airport in London, a total distance of 9,600 miles. We spent 1 night in Nairobi, a
dangerous place where we almost ran from our hotel to a restaurant in a
Hilton hotel, 2 or 3 blocks away.
The next day, we met our driver/guide, Justus Munyambu of the
Kamba people. We were surprised
to learn that we were to be the only passengers on our tour. The vehicle was an 8-passenger van
with two roof popups from where we could take pictures, and we had plenty
of room. While touring, we saw
other vans with 7 or 8 people, and those people had to fight for camera
space.
Regarding the pictures, unfortunately some of them are of
pretty poor quality because, over the 32 years since we took the pictures,
the slide quality had deteriorated.
In order to obtain the pictures so that they could be uploaded to
the Internet, we projected the slides onto a screen, and then I used my
smartphone camera to take pictures of the projected slides, which allowed
me to enhance the pictures and then upload them to the Internet.
